There are many ways of celebrating our chickens. Elsewhere on this site, there's a page to leave a simple written memorial to a chicken we have loved and lost.
If that's something you'd like to do, just click on this link to go to the right page. Or leave your poem about the death of a chicken right here on this page.
Sometimes, though, you might just feel like celebrating the joy your chickens bring you and your family.
Quite often, when I'm sitting in my chicken run, I find myself composing a silly song which just expresses the pleasure of the moment. That's what this page is all about.
Celebrating your flock by making up a poem for one or all of them is a fun way to recognise that our chickens play an important part in our life.
I can hear you now: "I have no idea where to start!"
Think back to the time when you were at school. It may be a long time ago – it is for me! – but you may remember in your very early English classes being asked to write poetry, and having no problem with it at all! It may not have been great, but it was an expression of a personality – and it was enjoyable!
As we grow older, we also grow more self-conscious. Sadly, that often means we can leave our more creative, fun side behind in childhood.
Here's your opportunity to re-find and release some of that childhood creativity. It doesn't matter whether your poem is good or bad, whether it rhymes or doesn't.
It can be as long or as short as you like. It can be sad or happy, funny or serious – whatever you want to write and however you want to write it is fine.
This creation is all yours, and the important thing is that you're celebrating one (or all) of your flock.
By and large, children love writing poetry. And, if they're lucky enough to have them, they love chickens too.
So if you have littlies who have their own much loved chicken, or perhaps who would love chickens but can't have them just yet, why not set them a task of writing poetry dedicated to their feathered friends?
After all, it's not just a fun activity. Their writing and creative skills will be used – and they'll love to see the finished work live on a website. Something to tell their friends about!
Poetry is just a collection of words. Some people like to paint a picture with crayons or paint brushes. Other people prefer to use words.
Feel free to use the words which feel closest to your heart to describe the pleasure your chickens bring you.
Just start writing!
If there are enough submissions, we'll put them together to make a book which you will be able to share with your family and friends.
Imagine – seeing your name in lights and your poem published!
In order for this to work, please make sure to leave your name, location and wherever possible a photograph of you with your chicken along with your poem. I'll take this as confirmation that you agree to your poem being published.
Please note: any submissions which talk about eating or otherwise harming chickens will not be published.
Here's where to do it. Just follow the instructions below and you'll be a published poet in no time!

My family thought I was crazy for wanting chickens in the city,
Little did they know I have been planning this for years with my kitty.

There aren't many out there, but this book of poultry poems goes down particularly well with 2nd grade students.
It's fun, it's amusing – it's about chickens! Don't buy it expecting great poetry, but if you have young kiddos who love their chickens, or who would love to have chickens, they'll enjoy it.
Remember: if there are enough poems submitted on this page, we'll make our own book!
