Hatching an online shop bought egg during lockdown.

I could not believe my eyes when the Ocado blue shelled egg from the online shop began to develop into a chick. I started it off in the incubator then luckily my hen went broody so I am three days away hopefully from a Royal Legbar chick?

Wow!

Hi Polly,

Lovely chicks, thank you for sharing their pics! I wasn't sure if any of them are your shop egg.

It's very unusual, but not unheard of, for an egg from a store to hatch.

Ordinary supermarket eggs won't, because they're from commercial farms where hens are kept in cages and don't have cockerels (rooster) to fertilise the eggs.

Eggs from farm shops can, unless it's clear that there is no male chicken available to the hens. Not many farms say whether or not they have males available.

So, if your egg has shown signs of development, it looks like your Ocado egg was from a source who had a male available to the hens.

If these chicks aren't the store-bought chick, I'd love to see a pic, if it does hatch!

My kids incubated and hatched 10 chicks!

Of course during a pandemic, what better schooling idea than getting fertile eggs and hatching a baby chicks! So that what we did.

My 11 year old took it head on and has really learned sooo much about the process and chickens in general. Her sister and brother were helpful too, encouraging those babies to come out!

We even had to save a baby chick who was stuck in her shell and she had a crooked foot but is now a perfectly healthy chicken.

Now we have 10 beautiful chickens they are so proud of and love ❤️.

Being proud!

Thank you so much for sharing your chicks with us, Courtney - they are just delightful!

What a great way to turn the pandemic into a positive experience for your children. You must be so very proud of them for taking the responsibility to learn about the process and to be actively helping, especially having to help a chick out, which can be such a stressful experience.

And one day you'll be able to enjoy all their delicious eggs, too.

Wonderful - thank you!
